The recent floods came at the worst possible time for Iowa's economy, with the national economy already in peril . However, not all of Iowa's economic troubles are attributable to outside forces. As it turns out, wasteful spending and corporate handouts continue to plague Iowa's already struggling financial infrastructure - the result of legislation drafted within the state's own borders.

The presumptive Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, came out in support of a House bill this week that would grant immunity to telecommunications companies that participated in warrantless wiretaps. This is a poor decision and a step in the wrong direction for a candidate who suggests that he is representative of a change in government.

Two of the June 26 Supreme Court rulings - both decided 5-4, with the same alignment of justices - concerned the Constitution's first two amendments. One ruling benefits Barack Obama by not reviving the dormant debate about gun control. The other embarrasses John McCain by underscoring discordance between his deeds and his promises.
