After watching Family, Friends, and Alumni Weekend's Friday performance, there was no denying that La Crosse is home to a fine musical talent; Shoeless Revolution. Having never heard of this 7-man band and under normal circumstances not being an avid browser of the funk aisle at the music store, their music found me grooving to a new tune.
Classifying themselves as Funk/Pop/Rock band, The Shoeless Revolution is: Reed Grimm- Lead Vocals, Drums Jack Sabol-Williams- Keyboards, Vocals Ben Peterson- Bass, Vocals Eric Streske- Guitar, Vocals Kevin Klemme- Trumpet Jim Piela- Alto/Tenor/Soprano Sax Nick Carlson- Tenor/Baritone Sax, Flute, Clarinet .
"Whether it be an up-tempo funk or a laid-back groove, we want to feel good playing it, and at the same time bring something new to the listener's ear," says drummer and vocalist Reed Grim. And that feel-good vibe was evident; feet were thumping, heads were bobbing and Chancellor Joe Gow's simple request for their autographs ultimately gave way to his own guitar talents being entertainingly showcased alongside the band.
Their music was fresh and the Jazz/Funk flavor of their music gave way for wicked entertainment. Shoeless is different from the numerous break-through attempts the music industry is trying to weed into stacks of fame or lame, in that their sound is unique, relatable and exceptionally contagious. Their debut album, Speak Up, found inspiration from simple situations in life, such as having a lot of crap in one's car and making that mundane fact comical and pleasurable to the ear.
Enthusiastically playing Speak Up's nine tracks, it was tricky to discern what held me transfixed and in awe. It might have been Reed's crazy antics at the drum, or the out-of-this-world horn section, or quite possibly the fact that this band was different from many tween sensations in that all members were equally talented and there was not just one vocal leader. Some jams from the album include the title track Speak Up, as well as Simplify and Repeat for their outrageous beat, hilarious lyrics and the genius mix of drums, guitars and horns, and even the flute.
This group is not your regular bandies. If you like to slow it down, their song Used is mellow madness but still holds true to their edge with incredible horn solos and definitive brass beat.
Upset that you missed this concert, or wondering if Shoeless is something for you? Do you like Halloween Costume parties with prizes? Shoeless will be making their next La Crosse performance at the Concordia Ballroom (on the corner of La Crosse Street and West Ave., next to Beef & Etc.) Friday October 31st with doors opening at 6pm, tickets are $10.00 at the door.
