Originally from Independence, WI, Karla Stanek found the city of La Crosse to be much more fitting.
After high school, Stanek attended UW-La Crosse where she called Hutchison Hall her home. "My favorite place to eat during my undergrad was the Pizza Wagon, of course it's long gone now," said Stanek. Stanek played on an intramural basketball team as a student with friends.
Stanek grew up with a dream of being a reporter after becoming so familiar with her fathers newspaper company. At UW-L, she wrote and edited The Racquet Newspaper for a few years. "One year, I remember, I was the sports editor. That was tough stuff because there were so many sports to cover," said Stanek.
After obtaining her undergrad degree, Stanek continued studying at UW-L to receive her masters. While in grad school, Stanek began working for University Publications. "I handled all the printing contracts, the alumni magazine- a ton of stuff. It's really gone down over the years," said Stanek.
Currently, Stanek is the Advisor of the College of Business, Career Services Advisor and Director of Academic Advising. "I've been working with business majors forever. I love my job here. My favorite part is the student contact," said Stanek. She continued, "The best aspect of UW-L are my colleagues across campus. The faculty and administrators are a real strong group to work with. UW-L is probably one of the premier campuses because of the town and the community. It's a great campus with a great student body and faculty," said Stanek.
Stanek and her husband John live in La Crosse and have two girls, Kasey and Kelly. John is also a UW-L alumnus and on the UW-L athletic wall of fame for holding the conference record for the most tackles. He now owns his own business as an electrical contractor. Stanek's daughters both graduated from UW-Eau Claire.
Stanek said, "When I'm not reading emails, I like to be outdoors. I'm a big golfer. I like to be spontaneous and go with the weather."
