La-Brees-iana and who dat nation were celebrating on Bourbon Street on Sunday night after winning the Super Bowl. New Orleans fans can finally remove the paper bags from their heads and be proud of their first Super Bowl victory ever.
It was a beautiful Miami night and Drew Brees played an incredible game completing 32 of his 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. His arch-nemesis Peyton Manning also played a great game, but made one vital mistake. His late fourth quarter interception ended up costing the Colts the Super Bowl. Manning threw 31 completions for 333 yards and a touchdown. Tracy Porter picked off Manning on third down and danced 74 yards for a Saints touchdown, which ultimately killed any hopes of a Colts comeback.
The Saints got off to a rough start; after a 19 yard touchdown reception by Pierre Garcon in the first quarter the Colts were up 10-0. Garrett Hartley, the hero against the Minnesota Vikings, rose to the occasion again making both his field goal attempts in the second quarter to bring the Saints a little closer. The Saints only trailed the Colts 10-6 at half. The first play of the second half was one of the gutsiest plays in Super Bowl history. Saints coach, Sean Payton decided to come out with an onside kick to open the half. If the Colts would have recovered the ball it could have been one of the dumbest plays in Super Bowl history. Instead the Saints pounced on the ball and began their drive. That drive ended in a Drew Brees 16 yard touchdown pass to Pierre Thomas. The Saints claimed the lead 13-10. Joseph Addai would answer right back with a 4 yard touchdown run that gave the Colts a 17-13 lead. Hartley hit a 47 yard field goal making it 17-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was dominated by the Saints. Drew Brees hooked up with Jeremy Shockey for a two-yard touchdown pass and then the Saints converted on the questionable two-point conversion. The Saints led 24-17 on the scoreboard with 5:42 left, but the Colts had the ball. Peyton Manning was driving the Colts down the field and the chances of scoring and evening the score were getting better by the moment. Then Porter came up with the big pick six that sealed the deal, 31-17. There wasn't a single turnover in the game until that point and with the way the game was going, whoever made the first mistake was going to lose. Nobody thought it would be Peyton Manning making that mistake, but it happened and the Saints capitalized on it.
Brees and Manning combined for a Super Bowl record 63 completions. Marques Colston had seven of those receptions for 83 yards; his teammate Devery Henderson also hauled in seven receptions for 63 yards. Manning's favorite target was Dallas Clark from the get-go and Clark finished with seven receptions and 86 yards.
Brees outplayed the former Super Bowl MVP and became a Super Bowl MVP, as well. He played a near flawless game leaving New Orleans fans calling him "Breesus." So I guess the question remains unanswered; who dat gonna beat dem Saints?
