According to their webpage, OCW is a group that strives to promote equal opportunity for all women by improving and enhancing their status in the community. However, OCW also has its own book club that meets at noon each month in Murphy’s Mug.
When asking around, not many people know about the book club. Even in the English department there were some questionable looks regarding a book club on campus. Jaralee Richter, the facilitator of the book club, says “Students don’t typically attend this book club.” However, the club is open to anyone on campus who simply loves to read, including faculty and staff.
At the discussions, people from all parts of La Crosse get the chance to sit together and converse about an assigned book over a cup of coffee or tea; it is an extremely informal and relaxed atmosphere. There is no specific genre in which books are discussed, it ranges from Firooseh Dumas to Jodi Picoult.
At almost every meeting, members have the chance to recommend a book they see fitting for the club’s next discussion group. “Anyone in the group can recommend books and we come to a consensus on the book choice,” says Richter. She also notes the books read are often in preparation for an event that will occur on campus. “When there are authors coming to campus to speak, we will usually read their book that month in preparation for the lecture,” she says.
In regard to their name, OCW accepts male participants as well. “Men are welcome to attend this book club,” says Richter. “We are open to everyone.” And joining is a breeze too. Simply show up, and you are a member. Can’t make the meetings, but still want to discuss the books? Go to OCW’s homepage (www.uwlax.edu/ocw) and join online for free.
The special thing about this club is that it’s not one that’ll make you feel tied down and obligated to show up to each month. Announcements of future books and dates are in the Campus Connection, so keep your eyes peeled for books and meetings--you don’t want to miss out on great reads, great coffee and great conversation!
