On April 13th students will be electing a new president and vice president. While all of the candidates have previously been involved in student government, there is a clear choice as to which candidates have a proven track record of yielding results for their fellow classmates. Senators Eric Schmidt and Kyle Dill have the right experiences and qualifications to lead UW-L at the dawn of its new century.
Eric Schmidt has valiantly served students in past years as a senator. He has authored and sponsored legislation to promote safety, bring Lisa Ling to speak on campus, urge Governor Doyle to convert the coal plant to burn biomass, and to call for free H1N1 vaccinations on campus. Schmidt's role as a City Council representative has allowed for personal connections with government officials that have led to real change for students. Schmidt was responsible for fighting to change winter parking rules so students in the Fifth District only have to park on the alternative side of the street if the City issues a snow emergency. Accomplishments like these are what students can look forward to when voting for Schmidt.
Kyle Dill has quickly risen to become one of the campus' most influential public servants. As a member of the Joint Planning and Budget Committee, Dill has been a champion of diversity, working with Chancellor Gow to develop UW-L's Growth, Quality, and Access program. He was instrumental in planning and running UW-L's Haiti Day of Action fundraiser and worked to improve the taste and health value of campus food as a member of various dining committees. Dill wrote legislation to bring back the university's Safety on Our Sidewalks program, ensure that the university's pay-for-print policy is used in investments backed by students, and to alter Student Senate by-laws to make student government more inclusive for all students. Furthermore, Dill's voting record shows dedication to saving students' money and advocating for student rights.
After looking at the candidates' platforms and talking to university officials, one thing is clear: Schmidt and Dill offer practical ideas that can yield superior results. The two would cut their own salaries, create a discount card for students, increase transparency, assess the value of segregated fees, and promote campus diversity. When you cast your vote on April 13th, remember the names of Schmidt and Dill if you want to Get Stuff Done!
